Yup, that’s right I said it, crafting is my therapy. THERAPY! There is just something so effortless, peaceful, and soothing about getting lost in crafting and making things. Some people run, I craft!
Now I’m not a perfect crafter, honestly, and it’s taken me a long time to be OK with that. I am still learning to let the imperfections roll off my back. You can read all about being perfectly imperfect here. But, I get lost headfirst in it while I am figuring it out. I lose track of time and forget my troubles for a bit. It’s lovely.
It’s the process of crafting I enjoy.
It is not so much the end product that is important (because like I said sometimes it’s real crap-ola!) but rather it’s the process of crafting I enjoy. From the inspiration to try something, the research to figure out how to make it, the test runs, the details and the perfecting of techniques. When I take on something new, I go all in. I do the research, all the research, I test and try and tweak. I make a ton of whatever it is I’m making at the time – until I’m sick of it!
And I’ll tell you, even the fails can be enjoyable – because craft fails can make you laugh ’til you cry sometimes.
Craft fail “Nailed Its” can be the best entertainment.
I’ve made some doozies – maybe I’ll start taking pics so you can share in the hilarity. It’s that moment when you have spent hours on something you think is going to be so amazing, and then you step back and away from it and look with fresh non-crafting frenzied eyes and you realize it is simply a ridiculous hideous mess!
Countless times I’ve been sooooo proud of myself just working my little fingers to the bone, thinking how impressive it’s going to be – and then the whole thing is nothing but a garbage hot mess! My friend Calley says it takes making something 5 times to really get it right, I think she’s on to something.
That’s what I call flearning – some quality failing and learning at the same time!
My point is, crafting is my running, it’s my freedom, it’s my outlet, it’s my medicine. It’s what I turn to when I need to get distracted or feel good about myself. I suppose that’s why my crafting area is an entire floor of our house, and friends know they never need to go to a craft store, they just come to me!
